Where do all the unreleased tracks go?

I doubt I’m the only producer with have a hard drive containing various projects that have not seen the light of day.  Mine includes a mixture of half-baked ideas, completed tracks, edits or reworks of the well-known and the not-so-well-known.

A couple of months ago while playing at a gig, we got chatting to another producer friend of ours.  This fine gentleman has built himself a reputation for highly regarded reworks, edits and latterly original tracks and remixes.  He asked me about a particular track me and my production partner had played him last year, and whether we had finished it.  I had to tell him that I had completely forgotten about this track and thanked him for reminding me.  I’m sure I’m not alone in starting something that subsequently gets left on the shelf for several months, even if it’s been finished.

We road-tested this track and knew it had potential, but the poor little mite got lost in the gigabits of hard drive oblivion.  God knows when it would have resurfaced were it not for our friend’s gentle reminder.

So, with a little more work on it and a sprinkling of our friends musical magic, that track became ‘Afro Croissant’.  Sometimes, you just can’t beat a gentle reminder.
